WordPress is a CMS developed in 2003 by Matt Mullenweg and Mike Little. While it was originally intended to create blogs, it can be used as a content management system for any type of website. It is an open-source product, so users can modify it for their own needs. It originated as a fork of b2/cafelog which was developed in 2001. In May 2003 they released the first version of WordPress. Due to its ease of use and flexibility, it is one of the most popular content management systems. As of 2022, it is estimated that one third of the top million most visited websites were run on WordPress.

WordPress.org is an open-source self hosted version of the WordPress platform. This allows you to install the software and run it on your own hardware. WordPress.org functions as a repository for information, downloads, resources and community dedicated to the open-source use of WordPress.

WordPress.com Entity

WordPress.com is a for profit hosting service for WordPress sites. It allows users to pay for access to pre-installed WordPress servers, and provides additional enhancements to the base WordPress installation.
